The final day of AUPE’s 48th annual Convention began with delegates adjusting the agenda to prioritize resolution debates before all other business.
There was no shortage of spirited debate. Delegates also made decisions to keep important monetary decisions in the hands of AUPE’s governing body, Convention.
We also had many challenging conversations about our dues. Delegates shared their experiences of struggling with the impact of the cost of living while also emphasizing the need to invest in AUPE’s Defence Fund to fight for the wages, job security, benefits we deserve.
After lunch, the Town of Coaldale’s ‘30-Strong’ AUPE members, who have been locked out for almost two months, shared an important update at Convention. After a challenging fight, they successfully forced the employer back to the bargaining table.
They thanked their fellow AUPE members for supporting Coaldale workers with meals, rain gear, moral and financial support during the lockout.
“Our fight is not over yet, but we will continue to do so until we get what we deserve,” they said. “We prove everyday it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.”
Conclusion
Delegates then reviewed AUPE’s Proposed 2025/2026 Budget in great detail before passing it. Although AUPE’s Committees were unable to share their reports, delegates acknowledged their hard work.
Convention closed with the swearing-in of Elected Officers and the customary singing of “Solidarity Forever.”
