Sponsored by AUPE Local 049 and administered by the University of Alberta
Nov 24, 2025
AUPE members enrolled in the University of Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Professional Diploma program will have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance, thanks to a generous donation from AUPE Local 049 in memory of fierce OH&S advocate Mary Kehoe.
All eligible AUPE Members are encouraged to apply.
The deadline for application is fast approaching, so please submit your application by Monday, December 8, 2025.
Selection will be based on the applicant’s academic standing and must meet the requirement of serving two consecutive years as an AUPE Member.
Local 049 made a generous donation of $50,000 to honour the memory and legacy of their friend, colleague and union sister, Mary Kehoe (1964 – 2022).
Mary was a Licensed Practical Nurse but after suffering an injury, worked as a Unit Clerk.
She was a fierce advocate for OH&S and active AUPE member, taking on leadership roles like Chapter Chair, Union Steward, Local Chair, Bargaining Committee member and OHS member on the worksite.
Her dedication to member safety inspired many members to take on OHS roles at their worksites. Mary was a fierce advocate for her fellow members, helping establish functional OHS committees and keep employers accountable.
Whether you were a nurse, a sheriff, or a government employee, Mary could apply the OHS legislation, process and information to your specific job site.
Local 049 hopes that those receiving this award will carry on Mary's legacy of promoting safety on the worksite, educating others and being an advocate for workers and their rights.
