Benevolence Care Centre: Getting ready to bargain
Bargaining update for Local 047 Chapter 053, Benevolence Care Centre
Sep 08, 2025
After a sea of red shirts washed through the halls of Benevolence Care Centre in the days leading up to meeting the employer, your negotiating team hit the table on August 25 and 26. We finalized outstanding non-monetary Articles and are now ready to move on to wages and benefits. We are optimistic that the positive tone will carry on in future meetings.
Resolved Articles include:
- Article 10 – Appointments, Vacancies, and Promotions
- Workers will be able to request feedback when their application for a new position is unsuccessful.
- Article 12 – Discipline and Dismissal
- Workers will receive 24 hours of notice before a disciplinary meeting. We will also be told the purpose of the meeting, including the issue being investigated.
- Article 14 – Hours of Work
- Workers will receive a minimum of 3 hours overtime if called back to work after a shift.
- Article 25 – Leaves of Absence
- Bereavement leave is extended from 7 day to 14 days. Aunt, uncle, niece, and nephew are added to relationships that qualify for bereavement leave.
- New Article – Contracting Out Notice
- The employer must notify and meet with AUPE representatives if they will contract out work.
- New Letter of Understanding
- Established a workload review process that is initiated by workers.
While these Articles have been agreed to at the table, they won’t come in force until you vote on the entire Collective Agreement.
Wear red for bargaining on September 15 and 16
Bargaining continues September 15 at Villa Marguerite and 16 at AUPE Headquarters. Wear red on those days to show your solidarity with your coworkers and your negotiating team! Snap a selfie with your teammates in red and send it to photos@aupe.org to be featured on AUPE’s social media. We had really strong support on our past red shirt days – let's keep it up!
