Why did GSBC not recommend how members should vote?

Many of you have asked why the GSBC has not provided a recommendation on how you should vote on the mediator’s recommendation. While we discussed this at length during the recent telephone town halls, we want to take a moment to clarify.

It is common for negotiating teams to recommend that members vote in favour of tentative agreements or mediator recommendations. However, there is no requirement for teams such as the GSBC to provide that direction. We also recognize that, while some members look for guidance, others prefer not to be told how they should vote.

In this case, the GSBC firmly believes that you should have the opportunity to vote on the outcome of mediation. We heard this clearly during town halls, membership meetings, and other engagement sessions. We felt it was the responsible course of action.

The alternative would have been to move directly to strike action without members knowing where mediation ended. This could have caused confusion, left members in the dark, and weakened the strength of any potential strike.

It is important to note that the mediator would release his recommendations to the membership only if the GSBC either:

  1. Recommended a “yes” vote, or
  2. Chose not to provide a recommendation.

The GSBC had extensive deliberations but did not reach consensus on recommending a “yes” vote. Therefore, the only way to bring the recommendation to you for a democratic decision was to present it without a recommendation attached.

Although this was a difficult step, the GSBC has remained cohesive, supportive, and united in working toward a successful conclusion. Our priority is ensuring that you have the information and tools you need to make an informed choice.

Ultimately, the decision rests with you, the membership—as it should. Whatever decision the majority makes, the GSBC will fully support.
