Coaldale applies for lockout while AUPE prepares strike vote
Bargaining update for Local 118 Chapter 001, Town of Coaldale
Aug 29, 2025
The Town of Coaldale has made an application to the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) for a lock-out of unionized workers.
This does not mean that a lockout is necessarily imminent. When bargaining breaks down, it is normal for an employer to apply for a lockout at the same time as a union applies to hold a strike vote.
We will be holding our strike vote on Sept. 2.
STRIKE VOTE
- TIME: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2.
- LOCATION: The HUB, 2107 13 Street, Coaldale.
The lockout application is not unexpected. Coaldale CAO Kalen Hastings has refused to respond to emails from your negotiating team to get back to the table. He clearly has no interest in bargaining or any respect for the work you do.
We don’t want a work stoppage, but being prepared to strike gives us the best chance to get a deal that works for us.
Please make sure to take part in the strike vote. A strong YES vote will give your negotiating team a better chance of getting a deal at the table.
If there is a strike or lockout, each side needs to give 72 hours’ notice.
If you have questions, please contact a member of your negotiating team.
