University of Calgary Update #10: Employer agrees to return to the bargaining table

Your negotiating team will meet with the employer on Oct. 16. to continue non-wage related discussions and present our wage proposal.

Informal mediation was not as productive as we had hoped, and the employer has decided not to restart informal mediation. While the university’s approach to bargaining has been challenging, we are cautiously optimistic that we can still reach an agreement at the bargaining table. We are committed to building a constructive relationship with the employer and getting the collective agreement we deserve.

If we don’t see significant progress at these meetings, a town hall will be scheduled to get your input on our next steps.  

Essential Services Agreement (ESA)

We have made slow but steady progress on our ESA. Progress has been slow due to delays by the employer in providing their essential services positions proposals.

Our essential services negotiating team is contacting members by phone and email to get feedback on the employer’s proposals. Your feedback is vital to the ESA process, and it is important that we respond to the employer’s proposals as soon as possible. Please watch your inbox for ESA emails.

The Essential Services Agreement is an important step in the bargaining process. We must have our ESA in place before we can request formal mediation.

Artificial Intelligence

Your team will also give a presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace when we next meet with the employer.  

This presentation, developed by AUPE’s Research department, deals with the growing threat AI presents to our jobs and livelihoods. We must prepare for AI in our workplaces by working with our employer to create policies to deal with this technology.
