Bargaining update for Local 039, SAIT

Employer remains resistant to demands

Your negotiating team is scheduled to meet with SAIT on September 18 & 19 to continue bargaining.

We hope to resolve our remaining non-monetary articles so we can begin bargaining for our wages. We are optimistic that progress is possible on wages after the employer signed the Letter of Understanding (LOU) on market adjustments with our Peace Officers.

Here are some of the non-monetary articles we will discuss:

  • Layoff and Recall  we will propose language regarding seniority be added to Article 12A. The employer continues to resist this improvement.

  • Seniority – we will propose creating a new article to deal with seniority. This proposal is a reorganization of the collective agreement and does not change seniority language. The employer is opposed to creating this new article and insists it is a “major change.”

  • Harassment, Discrimination, and Safe Workplace – a new article dealing with harassment and discrimination. Articles dealing with harassment and discrimination are very common in collective agreements and we do not understand the employer’s reluctance to its inclusion.

Next Steps

Wear red to support bargaining! Show your solidarity by taking photos of you and your coworkers wearing red and sending them to photos@aupe.org; they will then be posted to AUPE’s social media.

Please contact a member of your negotiating team if you have any questions or feedback about this bargaining update.
