Olds College needs to stop with the games and rollbacks
Bargaining update for Local 071 Chapter 002, Olds College – Non-academic staff
Jul 21, 2025
Your negotiating team met with Olds College on July 8 to continue bargaining. Even though they wanted to meet, the employer brought nothing new to the table. This was an unproductive use of our time.
The employer continues to propose non-monetary rollbacks that we have already rejected on four separate occasions. Your team made it clear: our members are satisfied with the non-monetary items of our current collective agreement and do not want to make any changes. We also want a serious monetary proposal consistent with proposals tabled by other post-secondary institutions.
But Olds College continues to offer rollbacks and low wages. One excuse is issues at other worksites, which have nothing to do with us and do not reflect our own issues. We all know that, in reality, the Provincial Bargaining Coordination Office (PBCO) is directing their moves in bargaining.
Your negotiating team introduced a Letter of Understanding (LOU) to significantly increase student wages. It aligns with other institutions, and we’ve included clear rationale and data. It’s with the employer for review.
Unless there is a shift in the employer’s approach, we see little value in returning to the bargaining table and will consider informal mediation.
Upcoming town hall
Your negotiating team is planning to hold a town hall in September to update you further on bargaining and answer your questions. Stay tuned for details.
