EDMONTON – Seniors’ care workers voted to join western Canada’s largest union, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

AUPE’s newest 67 members employed by Extendicare Eaux Claires voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the union. The Alberta Labour Relations Board granted AUPE certification on Nov. 3.

The staff now stand alongside more than 100,000 public and private sector workers fighting for fair wages and better working conditions.

“The health care staff at Extendicare Eaux Claires know that there is power in a union,” says AUPE Vice-President Bobby-Joe Borodey. “We are ready to leverage that power to get the wages and working conditions they deserve.”

“Employers are chipping away at quality public health care in Alberta through short staffing, unfair wages, and put profit over people,” says Borodey. “The General Support Service workers who keep our health care facilities safe and operational deserve collective agreements that respect the work they do and doesn’t force them to the food bank.”
