EDMONTON—The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) stands in solidarity with the members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) as they return to work.

“Teachers have shown incredible strength and unity throughout this struggle,” says AUPE President Sandra Azocar. “They have stood up for fair treatment and safer classrooms, for the high quality public education from which we all benefit.”

“The government’s decision is an ideological failure,” adds Azocar. “The government has failed our children, our teachers, and all Albertans.

“By revoking the teachers’ rights under the Charter, the Human Rights Act, and the Bill of Rights, this government has set a dangerous precedent. An injury to one is an injury to all.”

AUPE recognizes that being forced back to work does not diminish the teachers’ resolve nor the importance of the issues they have raised.

“Their courage and professionalism deserve respect,” says Azocar. “We will continue to stand with them, no matter what comes next.”

AUPE is monitoring the situation closely. AUPE reassures its members across the province, including AHS nursing care workers who are conducting a strike vote from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3, that the union is prepared to address whatever challenges lay ahead.

AUPE is western Canada’s largest union, standing over 100,000 members strong.
