Municipal election ballots will include candidates for school board trustees, council members, mayor, or in some rural areas of Alberta, reeve.
Municipal elections matter
Municipal elections are sometimes an afterthought, especially when they are overshadowed by the larger provincial and federal elections.
But your local governments are responsible for a lot of what directly matters to you and your community, including the “welfare and interests of the whole municipality” when developing policies and programs. They have influence on everything from road maintenance and snow removal budgets to the hours of operation of your local skating rink.
We elect School Board Trustees to govern Alberta’s public education system. This is a vital role. Trustees set their school division's strategic direction and create policies that directly affect students, parents, and staff. Trustees also advocate for students, evaluate superintendents, and approve their division’s budget.
A CBC News article from 2021 reported that just 37.6% of Edmonton’s eligible voters participated in that year’s elections. What’s worse? That was the highest turnout in Edmonton out of the last four municipal elections. A higher number of Calgarians voted, but that city’s turnout was still well below 50%.
AUPE’s Committee for Political Action believes that all political engagement is important. Your vote matters. We encourage all members to participate in the municipal elections just like they would a union election.
